SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Windows Vista, you try to capture video in Windows Media Center from an analog video camera or from a VCR. You try to do this by using a TV tuner card. However, you receive the following error message:

The Device is in Use

CAUSE

This issue may occur if Windows Media Center Receiver Service is started. Windows Media Center uses Media Center Receiver Service to record scheduled TV programs.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, stop and temporarily disable Windows Media Center Receiver Service. Then, try to capture video from an analog video camera or from a VCR.

Note When Windows Media Center Receiver Service is not running, TV programs that are scheduled to be recorded are not recorded. Therefore, after you capture video from an analog video camera or from a VCR, set Windows Media Center Receiver Service to start automatically. Then, restart the computer so that the Windows Media Center Receiver Service service starts.

Stop and temporarily disable Windows Media Center Receiver Service

  1. Open the Services item in Control Panel. To do this, click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type services in the Start Search box, and then click Services in the Programs list.
  2. Click Windows Media Center Receiver Service.
  3. On the Action menu, click Properties.
  4. Click the General tab.
  5. In the Startup type field, click Disabled, and then click OK.
  6. Restart the computer.

Enable Windows Media Center Receiver Service

After you capture video, set Windows Media Center Receiver Service to start automatically. Then, restart Microsoft Windows. This enables Windows Media Center Receiver Service.

  1. Open the Services item in Control Panel. To do this, click Start[GRAPHIC: the Start button], type services in the Start Search box, and then click Services in the Programs list.
  2. Click Windows Media Center Receiver Service.
  3. On the Action menu, click Properties.
  4. Click the General tab.
  5. In the Startup type field, click Automatic, and then click OK.
  6. Restart the computer.
