Article ID: 929522

Article Last Modified on 12/21/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition
  • Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Vista-based computer, you add new music to folders that Microsoft Windows Media Player monitors. However, the changes may not immediately appear in Media Center. The time that is required for the changes to appear depends on the size of the music library and on the number of files that you add.

CAUSE

When you create a media library, Windows Media Player monitors the referenced folders for changes. Media Center shares the Windows Media Player media libraries.

The monitor process runs in the background. It runs when there is not much activity on the computer. Therefore, the update may not start when the computer is busy with other tasks. For example, the update may not start when the computer is recording multiple TV shows in Media Center.

The update may also not start if you use a network, or Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path, for the monitored folder and the network is very busy.

Note An example of a UNC path is \\server\share_name.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, temporarily disable the monitoring folder feature. Then, manually update the libraries.

To disable the monitoring folder feature, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Media Player.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Library tab.
  4. Click Monitor Folders.
  5. Note the location of the monitored folder.
  6. Click the monitored folder, click Remove, and then click OK.

To manually update the libraries, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Media Player.
  2. Press F3.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Locate the folder where you added new music, and then click OK two times.
  5. On the Tools menu, click Apply Media Information Changes.
  6. Click Close.

To enable the monitoring folder feature again, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Media Player.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Library tab.
  4. Click Monitor Folders.
  5. Click Add, locate the monitored folder that you noted previously, and then click OK.
