Installation issues
Installation on Windows Vista requires elevated permissions
If you install this service pack upgrade on Windows Vista, we recommended that you right-click the service pack upgrade executable file and then click Run As. Alternatively, you can run the executable file from a privileged console window.
Known issues and workarounds
Running Visual Studio 2005 with administrator permissions is recommended
Some features of Visual Studio run only with administrator permissions. Therefore, when you use Visual Studio 2005, we recommend that you perform the following actions:
- Run Visual Studio with elevated administrator permissions.
- Use a user account that is a member of the "Administrators" group on the local computer.
- Right-click the Visual Studio icon and select the "Run as administrator" option from the context menu.

Justin time (JIT) script debugging does not work
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
Errors in scripts that run in Windows Internet Explorer will not cause a JIT dialog box to appear because of an elevated policy restriction.
To resolve this issue, add the following registry key:

A connection to the Visual SourceSafe Internet service may fail when you use Visual Studio 2005 SP1
After you install Visual Studio 2005 SP1 on a Windows Vista-based computer and you try to connect to a Visual SourceSave database by using the HTTPS protocol, you may receive the following error message:
NoteYou receive this error message when you use SourceSafe integration together with the Internet plug-in.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- If you are using VSS Administrator, restart VSS Administrator.
- Restart Visual Studio.
Consider the following scenario:
- You install Visual Studio 2005 on a computer that uses a non-English version of Windows XP.
- You upgrade the computer to Windows Vista.
- In Visual Studio, you use the New Project dialog box to try to create a new Visual Basic project, a new C# project, or a new J# project.
In this scenario, project templates may not be available in the New Project dialog box.
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods after you upgrade to Windows Vista:
- For Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click cmd.exe in the Programs list.
- At the command prompt, type vbexpress.exe /installvstemplates, and then press ENTER.
- For Visual C# 2005 Express Edition, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click cmd.exe in the Programs list.
- At the command prompt, type vcsexpress.exe /installvstemplates, and then press ENTER.
- For Visual J# 2005 Express Edition, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click cmd.exe in the Programs list.
- At the command prompt, type vjsexpress.exe /installvstemplates, and then press ENTER.
- For all other versions of Visual Studio, follow these steps:
- Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click cmd.exe in the Programs list.
- At the command prompt, type devenv.exe /installvstemplates, and then press ENTER.

You must install the following tools and runtime to support end-to-end SQL Server-based data development in Windows Vista:
