SUMMARY

This article describes how to use the Zune software to remove or to prevent a file from your Zune device.

MORE INFORMATION

Most files that you remove from your Zune device can be restored from your collection when you sync the device. However, you cannot restore files that are preloaded on the device.

Note Except for the contents of the Inbox, you cannot use the Zune device interface to remove files from the device.

To remove a file from the Zune device, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Zune software, and then connect your Zune device to the computer.
  2. In the menu, click device, and then select music, playlists, videos, pictures, or podcasts, as appropriate.
  3. Locate and then right-click the file(s) that you want to delete. Then, click Delete from <device name>.
  4. Click OK to confirm the deletion.
  5. Disconnect your Zune device from the computer when the synchronization is completed.

If you delete a file that is part of a synchronized playlist from your Zune device, the Zune software will skip that file the next time that you sync the device. Therefore, the deleted song, video, or picture will no longer appear on the Zune device.

Note You cannot delete individual items from a playlist in the device view. You should use the collection > playlists option to manage the contents of your playlist, and then synchronize the new playlist to your Zune device.

To restore a deleted file to the Zune device:

  1. Start the Zune software, and then connect your Zune device to the computer.
  2. In the menu, click collection, and then select music, playlists, videos, pictures, or podcasts, as appropriate.
  3. Locate the file that you deleted from the device.
  4. Right-click the file(s) that you want to restore, and then click Sync with <device name>.
  5. Disconnect your Zune device from the computer when synchronization is completed.

To prevent a file from syncing to the Zune device:

  1. Start the Zune software, and then connect your Zune device to the computer.
  2. In the menu, click collection, then select music, playlists, videos, pictures, or podcasts, as appropriate.
  3. Locate the file that you want to prevent from syncing to the device.
  4. Right-click the file(s) that you want to prevent from syncing, and then click Never sync with <device name>.
  5. Disconnect your Zune device from the computer when synchronization is completed. You can reverse this setting by locating the media in your collection, right-clicking the item, and then clicking Make available for sync with <device name>.
