A service pack does not install on a x64-based passive node cluster computer that is running SQL Server 2005

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a service pack on an x64-based passive node cluster computer that is running Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the service pack does not install on the passive node. Additionally, the following messages may be logged in the installation log:

Message 1


Date Time Product: Database Services (64-bit)

Message 2


Date Time Database Services (64-bit) (RTM 1399 ENU SQLFOCL-1) - Failure

Message 3


Date Time Details: No passive nodes were successfully patched

The following error messages are logged in the passive node of the installation log:

Error message 1


MSI (s) (2C!BC) [23:38:33:530]: Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit) -- Error 29530. Failed to set registry settings for server network libraries. The action is SetDefaults. The error is 11001 (No such host is known.)

Error message 2

CAUSE

This problem may occur when DNS resolution of the cluster virtual server name fails.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the virtual server host name and the associated IP address to the LMOSTS file on the local computer. The LMHOSTS file is located in the following folder:

%SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Etc


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
