INTRODUCTION

This article describes the upgrade process that occurs when you install Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint on a computer that is running an earlier version of Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint.

MORE INFORMATION

Upgrade process

To start the installation or upgrade process, run the Setup.exe file from the installation folder. The installation program detects previous installations of Forefront Security for SharePoint. You can use the Local or Remote installation options to remove the earlier version or to upgrade the existing version.

To upgrade an existing installation of Forefront Security for SharePoint, you only have to provide the password for the user account under which the Forefront Security for SharePoint services run. For security reasons, Forefront Security for SharePoint does not store this password.

When you upgrade, Forefront Security for SharePoint keeps all the previous settings. You can use the Forefront Security for SharePoint installation wizard to customize the upgrade process to suit your environment.

Note Forefront Security for SharePoint may prompt you to restart the server to complete the upgrade process.

After the upgrade process is complete, the configuration settings are maintained for the following items:

  • Pre-existing file filters
  • Content filters
  • General option settings
  • File scanner update schedules
  • Update paths

Note When you upgrade Forefront Security for SharePoint, the template settings for all scan jobs are configured to "none." This configuration prevents users from accidentally overwriting existing settings. To deploy templates, you must change these template settings on each server to "default" or to a named template.

For more information about how to configure scan job template settings, see the "Templates" section in the "Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint User Guide" document.

Microsoft Hot Upgrade technology

You can use the Microsoft Hot Upgrade technology to apply most upgrades to existing versions of Forefront Security for SharePoint without stopping or restarting the SharePoint Portal Server services. However, if critical files have to be upgraded, the services must be restarted after the upgrade. In that case, you can restart the services after the upgrade.

Alternatively, you can stop the upgrade if you do not want the services to be restarted at that time.
