SYMPTOMS
You create a workbook that contains a relative name in Microsoft Office Excel 2007. Then, you create a second workbook that contains a reference to the relative name. You save the second workbook in the Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls) file format, and then close both workbooks. When you reopen the workbook that was saved in the Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls) file format, the reference to the relative name is not updated as expected.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Open the workbook that contains the relative name first
First, open the workbook that contains the relative name. Then, open the workbook that contains the reference to the relative name.
Method 2: Save both workbooks in the "Excel Workbook (*.xlsx)" file format
Save both the workbook that contains the relative name and the workbook that contains the reference to the relative name as Excel 2007 workbooks. For example, save both workbooks in the Excel Workbook (*.xlsx) file format.
