SYMPTOMS
A Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer that is running Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 randomly and repeatedly stops responding. To restore functionality, you must manually reset the computer.
You experience this problem if the following conditions are true:
- The computer has two or more processors installed.
- The computer is running a 16-bit program in a Virtual Dos Machine (NTVDM) process.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if a 16-bit program is running in a NTVDM process at the same time that the Virtual Server Vmm.sys process runs. This may cause "infinite spinning" behavior on both of the CPUs in the computer. This CPU behavior occurs at the DISPATCH_LEVEL of processing. Therefore, the computer stops responding.
RESOLUTION

No prerequisites are required to install this hotfix.
Restart requirement
You do not have to restart the computer when you apply this hotfix. However, you must shut down all running virtual machines to apply this hotfix. Additionally, you must stop the Virtual Server service when you apply this hotfix.
