SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario:
- You use the Window.Open method to open an unrecognized file on a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer.
- The Information Bar displays a message that it has blocked downloads from the site, and you are prompted to click the Information Bar to select an option from a list.
- In the list, you click Always Allow Pop-ups from this Site.
In this scenario, a pop-up window briefly appears and then disappears. The File Download dialog box does not appear as expected, and you cannot open or download the file.
Notes
- This behavior occurs even if you add the site to the Allowed sites list in the Pop-up Blocker settings dialog box.
- This behavior typically occurs when you open certain types of files that cannot be displayed directly in Windows Internet Explorer, such as a file that has a .doc or .xls file name extension. By default, these file types are not displayed directly in Internet Explorer.
- This behavior does not occur when you open files that can be displayed directly, such as PDF files and files that have a .txt or .htm file name extension.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, add the site to the Local Intranet zone in Internet Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- On the Security tab, click Local Intranet, and then click Sites.
- Click Advanced in the Local intranet dialog box.
- In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the URL of the site.
- Click OK two times.
- Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
