Error on your Zune device when you play protected files that you obtained from the Zune Marketplace: "This item has expired."

SYMPTOMS

When you play a song on your Zune device that you obtained from the Zune Marketplace, you receive the following error message:

This item has expired.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the media usage rights have expired for the file that you are trying to play.

Note Media usage rights are also known as a license.


THINGS TO TRY

If your Zune Pass subscription has expired, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Zune software.
  2. Determine whether you have to renew your Zune Pass subscription. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Sign In, enter your Windows Live ID and password, and then click Sign In.
    2. Click the Sign In icon again, and then click Account Management.
    3. On the Account Summary page, click Zune Pass, and then follow the instructions to update your Zune Pass subscription.
  3. Connect the Zune device to your computer by using a Zune Sync Cable.
  4. Make any changes to your library content that you want, and then sync your Zune library content to the device.

If you have changed from having a subscription, such as the 14-day trial, to using Microsoft Points to buy the same songs, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Zune software.
  2. Connect the Zune device to your computer by using a Zune Sync Cable.
  3. In the left Navigation Pane, click Album or Songs under the name of your device.
  4. Locate the album or the song that was previously obtained through your subscription, but that you have now purchased.
  5. Right-click the album, and then click Delete.

    Note If you need to select multiple albums or multiple songs, press and hold the CTRL key while you click to select the albums or the songs. Right-click one of the selected items, and then click Delete. If you need to select all files, click to select one album or one song, and then press CTRL+A to select all of them. Right-click one of the albums or one of the songs, and then click Delete

    You will receive the following message:

    Are you sure you want to delete the selected items from device name?

  6. Click OK.
  7. In the left Navigation Pane, click Album or Songs under Library.
  8. Locate the album or the song that you just deleted from the device.
  9. Right-click the deleted albums or the deleted songs, and then click Add to Sync list.
  10. In the list pane on the right side of the window, click Start Sync.
  11. When the sync is complete, disconnect the Zune device.

If you do not remember what songs you purchased by using Microsoft Points, you may want to review your transaction history. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Sign In, type your Windows Live ID and your password, and then click Sign In.
  2. Click Sign In again, and then click Account Management.
  3. On the Account Summary page, click Account Management.
  4. Sign in by using your Windows Live ID.
  5. On the left side, click Billing.
  6. Click Microsoft Points, and then review your purchase history per month.
