SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft intermediate language (MSIL) Assembler (Ilasm.exe) in the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 to compile a Microsoft Visual Studio project, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

Dll.il(42) : error -- Invalid TypeDefID of exported type Assembled method Dll::.ctor

          • FAILURE *****

CAUSE

This problem occurs because two inner classes in the MSIL code have the same name.

RESOLUTION

Software update information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

After you apply this software update, you must type the full path of a nested class when a multi-module assembly contains double-nested public types. For example, you use code that resembles the following code example before you apply the software update.
