SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, you experience the following symptoms when you try to upgrade an earlier version of the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) to ITMU Revision 3:

Then, you receive the following message in the Setup wizard:
An entry that resembles the following is logged in the %Temp%\MSI
characters
.log file:Error 25000. {Error code: 0x80004005} === Logging stopped: <date> <time> ===
You experience this problem if you run the SMS 2003 ITMU Setup program in a Terminal Services session. You do not experience this problem if you run the ITMU Setup program from a console session on the SMS 2003 server.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of a problem in an early version of SMS 2003 ITMU Revision 3.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, install the latest version of SMS 2003 ITMU Revision 3. To obtain the latest version, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.
Method 1: Specify the /console option when you use a remote connection
If you are running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, specify the /console option when you start a Remote Desktop Protocol connection to the SMS 2003 server. To do this, click Start, click Run, type mstsc /v:ServerName
/console, and then click OK.
In this command, replace ServerName
with the host name or IP address of the computer that is running SMS 2003.
Method 2: Install SMS 2003 ITMU from a console session
Log on to the SMS 2003 server by using the console, and then run the SMS 2003 ITMU Setup program.
