Error message when you open a company file in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006: "The company database that you requested could not be opened"

SYMPTOMS

When you open a company file in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, you receive the following error message:

The company database that you requested could not be opened. Use the data utilities to ensure that the database exists and that it is attached to the server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of one of the following reasons:

• The port for the MICROSOFTSMLBIZ instance is incorrect.
• The MICROSOFTSMLBIZ instance uses the same port that another instance of Microsoft SQL Server uses.
• The database of the company that you try to open is not attached to Small Business Accounting.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Make a modification on the server computer

1. Click Start, click Run, type svrnetcn, and then click OK.
2. In the SQL Server Network Utility dialog box, click ComputerName\MICROSOFTSMLBIZ in the Instance(s) on this server list.
   

Note ComputerName represents an actual computer name.

1. Verify that the TCP/IP protocol is in the Enabled protocols field. Otherwise, click the TCP/IP protocol, and then click Enable.
2. In the Enabled protocols field, click the TCP/IP protocol, and then click Properties.
3. In the Default port field, type 56183, and then click OK.
4. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
5. In the Services dialog box, right-click MSSQL$MICROSOFTSMLBIZ Service, and then click Restart.
6. If you have multiple instances of SQL Server on the server computer, verify that these instances do not use port 56183.
7. Open the company file that is on the server computer.

Method 2: Make a modification on the local computer

1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Small Business Accounting, and then click Data Tools.
2. In the Small Business Accounting Data Tools dialog box, click Rebuild.
3. In the Rebuild Company File dialog box, make sure that the company that you try to open is not in the list of databases, and then click Close.
4. Click the Advanced Tools tab, and then click Attach.
5. In the Attach a Database dialog box, click Browse.
6. In the Select data file to attach dialog box, locate the Microsoft SQL Server data folder, click the .sbd file that you want to attach, and then click Open.
7. In the Attach a Database dialog box, type a name for the new company data file in the Database name field.
8. Click Attach, click OK, and then click Close.
