Headers and footers are unreadable when you open an Excel 2003 or Excel 2002 Web page file in a different language version of Excel

Article ID: 928134

Article Last Modified on 8/15/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Excel 2003
  • Microsoft Excel 2002 Standard Edition

SYMPTOMS

You save a Microsoft Office Excel 2003 or Microsoft Excel 2002 workbook by using the Web Page (*.htm, *.html) file format or the Single Web Page File (*.mth, *mthl) file format. When you open the Web page file in a different language version of Excel, such as French or German, the formatting of the workbook's headers and footers is lost. The text in the headers and footers overlaps itself so that the text is unreadable.

CAUSE

When you save an Excel workbook as a Web page file, the formatting information for the headers and footers is localized based on the language version of Excel. Therefore, when you open the Web page file in a different language version of Excel, the formatting information for the headers and footers is ignored.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, save the workbook in the Microsoft Office Excel Workbook (*.xls) file format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
