APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Antigen for Exchange
  • Microsoft Antigen for SMTP Gateways

SYMPTOMS

When you send an e-mail message that contains a uuencode file attachment, Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for Exchange or Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for SMTP Gateways incorrectly detects the uuencode file as a virus. Additionally, the uuencode file may be deleted depending on the Antigen 9.0 configuration settings.

Note This problem does not occur in earlier versions of Antigen.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because there is no fixed standard for uuencode file creation. Therefore, for security reasons, Antigen 9.0 follows an approach of detection instead of letting the uuencode file pass.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Antigen 9.0 for Exchange service pack that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Customer Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for installing this hotfix.

This hotfix will stop and then restart the SMTP service and the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. However, if the services cannot be stopped, or if files are left open, you may have to restart the computer.
