Article ID: 927915

Article Last Modified on 11/10/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 x32 Standard
  • Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 x32 Enterprise
  • Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 x64 Standard
  • Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 x64 Enterprise

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 by using a Storage Server product ID, the Licensing Mode screen incorrectly appears.

Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 has unlimited connections. Therefore, the Licensing Mode screen should not appear when you use a Storage Server product ID.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the product ID is not included in an answer file. When this problem occurs, Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Setup searches for the DigitalProductId entry in the registry. However, because the DigitalProductId entry has not yet been written to the registry, the search returns with an error. Therefore, the validation fails, and Setup does not verify that the installation is for Windows Storage Server 2003 R2.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, add the product ID to an answer file. For example, add the product ID to the $winnt$.inf file in the %windir%\System32 folder.

Note %windir% is the folder where Windows is installed. For example, %windir% may be the C:\WINDOWS folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
