This article describes how to use the Zune software to determine whether you have the appropriate media usage rights to burn songs that are in your library to a CD.

Before CD burning starts, the Zune software examines the files in your burn list. In some cases, a file may have an error that prevents the file from being copied. Some files may be protected by using media usage rights that prohibit the file from being burned to an audio CD or that limit the number of times that the file can be burned to an audio CD.
If you have the appropriate media usage rights to play a song in an audio CD drive, you can use the Zune software to burn your music. If you do not have the appropriate media usage rights for a file, the Zune software does not burn that file. Therefore, you have the choice to skip that particular file or to stop the burn process so that you can resolve the issue. If you can determine the files for which you have the appropriate media usage rights, the CD-burning process can run more smoothly.
You may find it convenient to sort your Zune library to determine the tracks for which you have the appropriate media usage rights. By sorting the library, you can distinguish those tracks that you can burn from those tracks that you cannot burn. To do this, follow these steps:
- Under Library, click Songs.
- Click the arrow next to the Change layout icon, and then click Details.
- Right-click the column header, and then click Choose columns.
- In the Choose Columns window, click Protected, and then click OK.
- To sort the column, click the column heading for the Protected column. Make sure that the songs that have a Yes value in this column appear at the top of the list. If these songs do not appear at the top of the list, click the column heading again.
- Open the CD Burn basket. The Zune software displays a gray “I” symbol to the left of all subscription content. This symbol indicates that you must purchase that song before you can burn the song.
If you want to burn all the songs in your library, purchase the license for the songs for which you do not already have the appropriate media usage rights.
If you do not want to purchase the appropriate license for all the songs in your library, select only songs for which you have the appropriate media usage rights when you burn a CD.
