INTRODUCTION

This article describes a hotfix that is available to install Microsoft NetMeeting 3.02 on computers that are running certain versions of Windows Vista.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Windows XP is the last client version of Windows that includes NetMeeting. NetMeeting is not included with Windows Vista. However, you may have an environment in which the following conditions are true:

  • You have to have NetMeeting for collaboration sessions.
  • You are deploying Windows Vista.

To help support the current collaboration sessions in this scenario, a hotfix is available to let you install NetMeeting on Windows Vista-based computers. This version of NetMeeting is intended as a transition tool to help support collaboration sessions when you use Windows XP-based computers together with Windows Vista-based computers in your environment.

You can install NetMeeting 3.02 on 32-bit versions of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Enterprise
  • Windows Vista Ultimate

Note NetMeeting 3.02 is not supported on any other operating systems.

Microsoft is no longer investing in NetMeeting technology. For more information about Microsoft unified communications products, contact a Microsoft support representative.

MORE INFORMATION

NetMeeting 3.02 disables the Windows Vista Aero Glass color scheme

When you run NetMeeting 3.02, NetMeeting disables the Windows Vista Aero Glass color scheme. When this occurs, the color scheme changes to the Windows Vista basic color scheme. The Windows Vista Aero Glass color scheme is restored when you exit NetMeeting.

NetMeeting 3.02 details

Except for the following items, NetMeeting 3.02 together with its exposed API set functions in the same manner as other versions of NetMeeting.

Note For more information about how NetMeeting works, see the current NetMeeting documentation.

File transfer

NetMeeting 3.02 creates a new received-files folder in the user's Documents folder. By default, this folder has the following path:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\Received Files

This path corresponds to the following path:

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Received Files

Earlier versions of NetMeeting use the following default path for received files:

C:\Program Files\NetMeeting\Received Files

This path corresponds to the following path:

%SystemDrive%\Program Files\NetMeeting\Received Files

Remote desktop sharing

NetMeeting 3.02 does not support remote desktop sharing. Therefore, the Remote Desktop Sharing option is not available on the Tools menu in NetMeeting 3.02.

Therefore, you cannot create a remote desktop sharing session from an earlier version of NetMeeting to an instance of NetMeeting 3.02 that is running on a Windows Vista-based computer. However, you can create a remote desktop sharing session from NetMeeting 3.02 on a Windows Vista-based computer to an earlier version of Windows that is running an earlier version of NetMeeting.

For more information about alternative solutions for this feature, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

The following table lists the available technologies that offer equivalent functionality to the NetMeeting remote desktop sharing feature that is included with earlier Windows operating systems.

Feature Windows Vista Windows Server 2003 Windows XP Windows 2000
NetMeeting Application Sharing X X X X
NetMeeting RDS Outgoing only X X X
Windows Meeting Space X
Remote Desktop Connection X X X X
Windows Remote Assistant X X X
Live Meeting X X X X

In this table, programs that have an X associated with them are available when you connect to the specified operating system from a Windows Vista-based computer. Each technology offers functionality that resembles the NetMeeting application sharing functionality.

The following table lists the features that apply to application sharing. In this table, features that have an X are available in the program that is listed in a particular column.

Functionality NetMeeting RDS NetMeeting Application Sharing Windows Meeting Space Remote Desktop Connection Windows Remote Assistant Live Meeting
Remote users can see the shared desktop or program X X X X X X
Remote users can control the shared desktop or program X X X X X X
Multiple remote users are enabled X X X
The host computer can see the desktop Optional X X X X
User must be present at the host computer X X X X

The following list describes three of these programs in more detail.

  • Windows Meeting Space (%programfiles%\Windows Collaboration\WinCollab.exe)

This program is available in Windows Vista to connect to another Windows Vista-based computer. Windows Meeting Space lets you call a remote computer to view and optionally to control that computer's shared desktop and programs.

Multiple clients may connect to a host computer at the same time. A user must be present at the host computer to use Windows Meeting Space.

  • Remote Desktop Connection (%systemroot%\system32\mstsc.exe)

This program is available in Windows 2000 and in later versions of Windows operating systems. This program works among these systems.

Remote Desktop Connection lets you call a remote computer to view and to control its shared desktop and programs. A client computer can connect to a host computer, but only the client computer can see the desktop. In this scenario, the host computer displays the logon user interface.

Additionally, only one client may be connected to the host computer at a time. No user has to be present at the host computer to use Remote Desktop Connection.

  • Windows Remote Assistant (%SystemRoot%\system32\msra.exe)

This program is available in Windows XP and in later versions of Windows operating systems. This program works among these systems.

Windows Remote Assistant lets you call a remote computer to view and optionally to control its shared desktop and programs. Only one client may be connected to a host computer at a time. A user must be present at the host computer to use Windows Remote Assistant.

Audio

Sound cards that do not have Windows Vista drivers may be unable to send or to receive audio through NetMeeting 3.02.

Video

Cameras that have Windows Vista drivers may be unable to send video through NetMeeting 3.02. If a camera that has Windows Vista drivers installed does not send video through NetMeeting 3.02, you may have to install the following camera:

Microsoft LifeCam VX 6000

This camera has been tested by using Windows Vista drivers.

Computer management

The computer management feature in Windows Vista cannot be used while you are in an application sharing session together with another computer.

The "User Account Control" dialog box

If the User Access Control dialog box appears in Windows Vista, the dialog box appears on the Windows Vista desktop as expected. However, the dialog box does not appear on a shared desktop.

Third-party programs

If a third-party program has a dependency on the NetMeeting 3.02 APIs, we recommend that you do not remove NetMeeting 3.02. If you remove NetMeeting 3.02 in this scenario, the third-party program may no longer work correctly.
