Error message when you try to create a new item in an invoice in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006: "<Item_name>: This name is already in use. Please use a unique name"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new item in an invoice in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006, you may receive the following error message:

Item_name: This name is already in use. Please use a unique name.

Note Item_name is a placeholder for the actual name of the item that you want to create.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

• The item name already exists, and the I sell this item check box is not selected. See Method 1 in the "Resolution" section.
• The item name already exists, and the item is an inactive item. See Method 2 in the "Resolution" section.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

1. On the Company menu, point to Company Lists, and then click Items.
2. Double-click the item that is not listed on the invoice, and then select the I sell this item check box.
3. Create the invoice again. To do this, follow these steps:
   1. On the Customers menu, point to New, and then click New Invoice.
   2. Select the customer in the Customer name field, select the item in the Products and services section, and then click Save and Close.

Method 2

1. On the Company menu, point to Company Lists, and then click Items.
2. Right-click the item that is not listed on the invoice, and then click Make Active.
3. Create the invoice again by using step 3 in the "Method 1" section.
