SUMMARY

This article describes how to remove information about the media that you play by using the Zune software.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the Zune software, the software and the computer store information about your play history. To remove this information, use any of the following methods that are appropriate to the type of information that you want to remove:

Remove CD history and Zune device history

The Zune software stores information about the CDs that you play and about the Zune devices that you connect to the computer. To remove this information, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Zune software.
  2. Click Options, point to Playback, and then click More Options.
  3. Click the Privacy tab, and then click Clear Caches.

Note When you clear the cache from the Zune software, this process also removes information about the folders that the software monitors, about the files on which you perform searches, and about files that you delete from your library.

Remove media information about files in your library

Media information about music files in your library appears in the Zune software. This information includes the files that you create when you rip songs from CDs. You cannot remove any existing media information. However, you can prevent the software from searching the Internet to retrieve or to display new media information about the media.

Note If you prevent the Zune software from searching the Internet for new media information, any new files that you rip from a CD appear as "Unknown" in your library.

To prevent the Zune software from searching the Internet for new media information, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Zune software.
  2. Click Options, point to Library, and then click More Options.
  3. On the Library tab in the Automatic media information updates for files area, clear the Retrieve additional information from the Internet check box.

Remove information about files that you have opened

When you use the Open dialog box (CTRL+O) to play a file, the computer stores a list of files that you open.

To clear the list of files that appears in the Open dialog box, clear the list of recently used documents on the computer. For more information about how to clear the list of recent documents on a computer, see the appropriate Help and Support topics in Windows XP.
