SYMPTOMS

When an Itanium-based version of Windows Server 2003 is operating under high stress, the kernel may not write registry information to the disk as expected. In this situation, the following event is logged in the System log:

An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably.
The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the system is operating under high stress and if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The system memory is exhausted.
  • A hardware error occurs.


RESOLUTION

To apply this hotfix, the computer must be running an Itanium-based version of Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1).
