Error message when you click "Edit" on a Project Web Access Web site in Internet Explorer 7: "Project Professional 2007 has taken too long to open"

Article ID: 927605

Article Last Modified on 2/7/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007

SYMPTOMS

You use Windows Internet Explorer 7 on a Windows Vista-based computer to visit a Microsoft Office Project Web Access Web site. In the Project Center, you select a project, and then click Edit.

When you do this, you eventually receive the following error message:

Project Professional 2007 has taken too long to open. If Project Professional 2007 is not running yet, manually open Project Professional 2007 and wait until it is running before trying your request again.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because by default, Internet Explorer 7 is set to use protected mode on a Windows Vista-based computer. Protected mode prevents Internet Explorer 7 from sending data to Microsoft Office Project Professional 2007.

This issue may also occur when the Project Web Access Web site was not added to the Trusted Zones list in Internet Explorer 7.

Note Internet Explorer 7 warns you when a Web site tries to install and to access software programs on the computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must include the URL of the computer that is running Project Server 2007 in the Trusted Zones list in Internet Explorer 7. Then, disable protected mode for that zone. To do this, follow these steps.

Important These steps may increase your security risk. These steps may also make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We recommend the process that this article describes to enable programs to operate as they are designed to, or to implement specific program capabilities. Before you make these changes, we recommend that you evaluate the risks that are associated with implementing this process in your particular environment. If you choose to implement this process, take any appropriate additional steps to help protect your system. We recommend that you use this process only if you really require this process.

  1. In Internet Explorer 7, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab, select Trusted Sites, and then click Sites.
  3. Under Add this Web site to the zone, type the URL of the computer that is running Project Server 2007. For example, type http://servername. Then, click Add, click Close, and then click OK.
  4. On the Security tab, click to clear the Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer) check box.
