Warning message when you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 in a side-by-side installation together with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0: "There are third party products installed that integrate with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0."

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You run the Setup program to install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a server that is running Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. You do not want to upgrade the existing installation of Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. Instead, you want to run Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 in a side-by-side installation on the same server. To do this, you click the following in the Upgrade earlier versions screen of the Setup program: No, do not upgrade at this time. The new version can be installed alongside the existing product and can run without impacting the older installation. Then, you click Install Now. In this scenario, a Setup Warning dialog box is displayed, and you receive the following warning message:

There are third party products installed that integrate with Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. Contact the vendor of those products to determine appropriate upgrade steps. Failure to do so could cause those products to stop functioning after upgrade.

You receive this warning message even though you are not upgrading Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if Microsoft Office 2003 Web Parts and Components is installed on the server. The warning message that is displayed by the Setup program incorrectly assumes that you are upgrading Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

WORKAROUND

You can safely ignore the warning message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. The warning message does not affect the functionality of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

Note Office 2003 Web Parts and Components is supported in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 only if you upgrade an existing installation of Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Office 2003 Web Parts and Components is not supported in a new installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
