Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 may send a notification message to multiple notification groups when a single alert is triggered

SYMPTOMS

When an alert is triggered in Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005, MOM 2005 sends a notification message to the notification group that is specified in the alert rule. This is expected behavior. However, MOM 2005 may also send notification messages to other notification groups. You may notice that one alert generates multiple notification messages. You experience this issue even if the rule group only has one alert rule that has a notification specified.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if an alert rule is not associated with the rule group of which it is a part. In MOM 2005, alert rules must be associated with these rule group. To associate an alert rule with its rule group, click to select the Only match alerts generated by the following group check box. The "Alert Criteria" topic in the MOM 2005 Help file mentions that if you do not select this check box, the rule may trigger notifications for any available rule. This behavior occurs regardless of the rule group with which the alert rule is associated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Start the MOM 2005 Operator Console.
2. Locate the alert that triggered the notification message.
3. In the Alert Details - AlertName area, click the History tab. The rule or rules that triggered a notification event for this alert appear on this tab.
4. Start the MOM 2005 Administrator Console.
5. Locate the additional rule or rules that triggered the notification event for this alert.
6. For each additional rule that triggered a notification event for this rule, follow these steps:
   1. Right-click the rule, and then click Properties.
   2. Click the Alert Criteria tab.
   3. Click to select the Only match alerts generated by rules in the following rule group check box, and then click OK.
   4. Right-click the rule, and then click Properties.
   5. Click the Alert Criteria tab.
   6. Verify that the correct rule group appears in the Criteria description area. If the correct rule group does not appear, click Browse, click the correct rule group, and then click OK two times.
7. In the left pane, right-click Management Packs, and then click Commit Configuration Change.

MORE INFORMATION

If the Only match alerts generated by rules in the following rule group check box is not selected for a particular rule, you may experience unpredictable results. For example, a SQL Server alert may trigger an event to send a notification message to messaging administrators. Then, a different SQL Server alert may trigger an event to send a notification message to network administrators. Therefore, we recommend that you follow the steps in the "Resolution" section until you no longer receive multiple notifications for a single alert.
