APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2007

SYMPTOMS

You open a personal folders file (.pst) from an earlier version of Microsoft Outlook in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. When you delete, rename, or move an item that is contained in the .pst file, the entry for the item is not completely deleted, renamed, or moved.

Additionally, if you try to clean up the contents of the .pst file by compacting the file, the properties that were in the .pst file when you opened the file remain.

Note You cannot see this behavior in Microsoft Outlook. To see this behavior, you must open the .pst file in a hexadecimal editor.

CAUSE

This issue may occur because Outlook 2007 writes indexing information into the .pst file. This information cannot be reconciled in a .pst file that is from an earlier version of Outlook. This indexing information is part of a new feature set that is available in new .pst files in Outlook 2007.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, create a new .pst file in Outlook 2007. Then, import the Outlook items from the old .pst file to the new .pst file.

To create the new .pst file, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Data File Management.
  2. On the Data Files tab, click Add.
  3. Click Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst), and then click OK.
  4. In the File name box, type a name for the .pst file, and then click OK.
  5. In the Create Microsoft Personal Folders dialog box, type a display name for the data file in the Name box.

This is the name that will appear in the Navigation Pane for the .pst data file. The default name for this folder is "Personal Folders." However, if you have multiple .pst files, and if all the files have the same default name, it will be difficult to distinguish one from the other. Therefore, you may want to give the .pst file a name that is meaningful to you.

  1. If you want, type a password in the Password and Verify Password text boxes.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click Close to close the Account Settings dialog box.

To import the Outlook items to the new .pst file, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Import and Export.
  2. Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.
  3. Click Personal Folder File (.pst), and then click Next.
  4. In the File to import box, type the path and the file name of the .pst file that you want to import.

Note Type the path of the .pst file that is from an earlier version of Outlook.

  1. Under Options, select how you want duplicates to be processed, and then click Next.
  2. Select the folder from which you want to import the .pst file. If you want to import the whole .pst file, click the topmost folder in the tree, and then click to select the Include subfolders check box.
  3. Click Import items into the same folder in, and then select the destination .pst file in the list.
  4. Click Finish.
