256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
SYMPTOMS
The backup program may fail or may incorrectly include some Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected files that should be excluded from the backup.
CAUSE
During setup, some files that are distributed with Microsoft Windows Media Player add a value to the following registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup\DRM
When the value is added to the FilesNotToBackup list, the data under the FilesNotToBackup\DRM registry key is not correctly terminated by using a double NULL character. This behavior may cause certain backup programs that enumerate this registry key to fail or to incorrectly include some DRM protected files.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, you must modify the DRM value. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup /v DRM /t REG_MULTI_SZ /d "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM\* /s" /f
MORE INFORMATION
This problem may occur when you upgrade to Windows Media Player 11. Windows Media Player 11 does not set or use this registry key. However, when you upgrade to Windows Media Player 11 from Windows Media Player 10 or from Windows Media Player 9, the registry key is not removed. If the problem occurs when you upgrade to Windows Media Player 11, use the workaround or manually delete the DRM registry value in the FilesNotToBackup key.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
