SYMPTOMS

When you try to run an application that is built by using the 64-bit Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Optimizing Compiler, the application may not run correctly. For example, the application may prematurely exit a code loop, or the application may perform too many iterations of a code loop. This problem occurs when you use the optimize for speed feature of the Visual C++ Optimizing Compiler.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the 64-bit Visual C++ 2005 Optimizing Compiler generates an incorrect instruction for the loop index counter when code loops are processed. When this occurs, the compiler may produce code that causes incorrect values to persist in the high 32 bits of a 64-bit register.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.
