SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows Media Encoder x64 Edition 9 Series and Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series on the same computer, you experience one the following symptoms:

  • You cannot use a 32-bit program to encode files by using the Windows Media Video 9 codec. Additionally, you cannot transcode any files in Windows Media Player 9.


This problem occurs when you install Windows Media Encoder x64 Edition 9 Series after you install the 32-bit version of Windows Media Player 9 Series.

  • You receive an error message in the Windows Media Encoder x64 Edition 9 Series Profile Editor when the video codec list is generated.


This problem occurs when you install the 32-bit version of Windows Media Player 9 Series after you install Windows Media Encoder x64 Edition 9 Series.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the information for digital media objects is overwritten in the registry. The information is overwritten when you install the second program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Reinstall the program that has the problem

Reinstall the program that has the problem.

After you reinstall Windows Media Encoder x64 Edition 9 Series, 64-bit encoding programs will work correctly. After you reinstall Windows Media Player 9 Series, 32-bit encoding programs will work correctly.

Method 2: Use the 32-bit version of Windows Media Encoder 9 Series

Use the 32-bit version of Windows Media Encoder 9 Series. This program works correctly together with 32-bit encoding programs and with Windows Media Player 9 Series.
