SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. In the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, you try to use the .NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL Server to retrieve the value of a column in a database. The column contains a text value or an image value. The value of the column is the 0xFFFF (65535) value. In this scenario, you may receive one of the following exception error messages:

Note The .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server is included in the System.Data.SqlClient namespace.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server in the .NET Framework 2.0 incorrectly treats the 0xFFFF value as a null value for a column that contains a text value or an image value. Therefore, the .NET Framework Data Provider for SQL Server stops reading the rest of the bytes, and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 stops responding (hangs).
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.
