There is no longer an option to reinstall components in the Windows Small Business Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 setup process

Article ID: 927097

Article Last Modified on 12/3/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, Standard Edition Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You start the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) integrated setup process from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. You select Windows Small Business Server 2003, and then you click Change. In this scenario, when you reach the component selection section, you do not have an option to reinstall all the Windows SBS components that are already installed.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you upgrade Windows SBS 2003 to Windows SBS 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) by using the Web download package or by using the provided service pack CDs. Because the binaries on the Windows SBS with SP1-based computer are newer than the ones that are available in the Windows SBS media, the reinstallation option is blocked.

MORE INFORMATION

When you reinstall the Windows SBS server software, you do not usually resolve a configuration issue on the computer. Reinstalling the software is only useful when the binaries for the function are missing or corrupted.

To resolve this issue, uninstall the desired component. Then, reinstall that component by using the Windows SBS media. Finally, you must reapply Windows SBS 2003 with SP1.

Note You should create correct system state backups before you start this process. Also, be aware that not all components behave in the same manner. For example, the Windows SBS integrated setup process does not work for the Intranet component. Additionally, other limitations may exist. Therefore, use caution when you uninstall any component.
