A user cannot select a phone book after you install a CMAK profile

Article ID: 927017

Article Last Modified on 12/13/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you use the Connection Manager Profile Installer (Cmstp.exe) to perform a silent installation of a Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) profile, a user cannot select a phone book and use the connection.

This problem occurs even if you enable the option to make the profile available to all users when you install the CMAK profile.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the user has not been granted the Write permission for the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk

When the CMAK profile is used for the first time, the _CMPhone and the .pbk files in the Pbk folder are updated. However, the _CMPhone file and the .pbk files are not updated if the user has not been granted the Write permission for the Pbk folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, grant all users the Write permission for the Pbk folder. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  2. Locate the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk

Note If you cannot see the Application Data folder, click Tools, click Folder Options, click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.

  3. Right-click the Pbk folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

Note If the Security tab does not appear, click Tools, click Folder Options, click the View tab, and then click Use simple file sharing (Recommended).
  4. Click Add, type Users, and then click OK.
  5. Under Permissions for Users, click to select the Allow check box for the Write permission.
  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.
