Stop error message on a Windows XP SP1-based computer: "STOP 0x000000D1"

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based computer that has certain wireless network devices installed, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

STOP 0x000000D1(parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

ar5211.sys

Note The parameters that are represented by parameter1, parameter2, and parameter3 in this message may vary.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the ar5211.sys chipset driver from Atheros is installed on the computer. This chipset driver is used by many Atheros wireless network devices.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the most recent drivers for the chipset. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start or restart the computer.
  2. During the startup process, press and hold the F8 key to access the Startup menu
  3. On the Startup menu, select Safe Mode.
  4. After the computer has started in safe mode, click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  5. Expand Network Adapters to access the network adapters list.
  6. Right-click the Atheros wireless network adapter, and then click Disable.
  7. Connect to the Internet by using a wired network connection. For example, use an Ethernet cable to connect the computer directly to the DSL line, the cable modem, or the router.
  8. Restart the computer in normal mode.
  9. Make sure that you are connected to the Internet.
  10. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  11. Expand Network adapters.
  12. Locate and right-click the Atheros wireless network device, and then click Update Driver.


Note If you are prompted to search for a driver from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, click Yes, this time only, and then click Next

  1. Click Finish, and then restart the computer.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  3. In the right-pane, expand Network adapters.
  4. Right-click the Atheros wireless network adapter, and then click Enable.
  5. Exit the Computer Management MMC snap-in.

MORE INFORMATION

An update for the Atheros ar5211.sys chipset driver is now available. It is the shp5211.sys chipset driver.

In certain rare cases, if you still experience the issue after you update the drivers for the chipset, you may have to replace the wireless network device with a newer model.
