256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SYMPTOMS

You cannot view the properties of objects in a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows 2000.

For example, when you right-click an event to view the properties in the Event Viewer, the Information Properties dialog box is not displayed.

CAUSE

The issue can occur if the IDataObject interface is not defined in the registry.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, you must reregister the Ole32.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:

    regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\ole32.dll

  2. In the RegSvr32 dialog box, click OK.
  3. Restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

This issue occurs in all MMC snap-ins.

When you close an MMC snap-in after you experience this issue on a Windows 2000-based computer, you may receive warning messages that resemble the following:

Close all property pages before closing Services.

Close all property pages before closing Event Viewer.

Close all property pages before closing MMC Snap-in Name.

Additionally, you must use Task Manager to close an MMC snap-in.

However, on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you may not receive these warning messages after you experience this issue. Additionally, you do not have to use Task Manager to close an MMC snap-in.
