PRB: MS Access Trims Leading Spaces Off Database Names

Article ID: Q92678
Creation Date: 12-NOV-1992
Revision Date: 19-SEP-1996 The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Access version 2.0, 7.0

SYMPTOMS

Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

When you name a database that has one or more spaces at the front of the database name, Microsoft Access version 2.0 strips off the leading spaces.

When you name a database that has one or more spaces at the front of the database name, Microsoft Access for Windows 95 version 7.0 strips off the leading spaces unless you enclose the name of the database within quotation marks.

CAUSE

By default, the Windows Common Dialog strips leading spaces off names.

RESOLUTION

In Microsoft Access 7.0, put the name of the database within quotation marks. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Access 7.0 and click New Database on the File menu.
  2. Double-click the Blank Database icon in the New dialog box.
  3. In the File New Database dialog box, under File Name, type " spaces.mdb" (include the two spaces and the quotation marks), and then click Create. Note that the quotation marks do not appear as part of the database name but that the two spaces in front of the database name are retained.
