Error message when you try to access Manual Payroll in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting: "An error occurred in payroll check creation"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access Manual Payroll in Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting, you receive the following error message:

An error occurred in payroll check creation. Cannot log on because the company database version is older than the application version, update the company database.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a service pack was recently applied to Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting. The service pack may cause a problem with the Manual Payroll calculation file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, re-create the Manual Payroll calculation file. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting.
  2. Locate the ManualPayrollCalculation1.xlt file.

    Note By default, the ManualPayrollCalculation1.xlt file is in the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\Small Business Accounting

  3. Right-click ManualPayrollCalculation.xlt, and then click Cut.
  4. Paste the file in a location that you can easily find on the computer.
  5. Start Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting.
  6. On the Employees menu, point to Manual Payroll, and then click Enter Manual Payroll.
  7. Re-create the Manual Payroll calculation file by entering the data from the ManualPayrollCalculation1.xlt file that you pasted in step 4.
