Package manager may not report corrupted offline Windows Vista images

Article ID: 926669

Article Last Modified on 3/15/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Enterprise
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Starter
  • Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Windows Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use package manager (Pkgmgr.exe) to service an offline Windows Vista image.
  • Package manager reports an error.
  • You use package manager again to service the same offline Windows Vista image.
  • Package manager may not report an error.

In this scenario, the Windows Vista image may be corrupted, even though you do not receive an error.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, discard the Windows Vista image and build a new image by using the last known valid Windows Vista image. You must not distribute the image if at any time package manager returns an error. This is the case even though later attempts to service the image do not return an error. Servicing operations for corrupted images may not apply later critical updates.

When you service an offline Windows Vista image, make sure that all offline servicing actions are successful. If there are any failures, discard the potentially corrupted Windows Vista image.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
