APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

SYMPTOMS

You start the Windows Backup program on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. When you do this, one or more of the following check boxes is missing from the Click to select the check box for any drive, folder or file that you want to back up list on the Backup tab:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Microsoft Exchange

Note This check box appears only if you are running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 in your organization.

  • System State

CAUSE

This issue occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The Eseback2.dll file and the Esebcli2.dll file are missing.
  • Group Policy processing prohibits the Backup Operators group and the Administrators group from backing up files and folders.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

Step 1: Verify that the correct Exchange Server .dll files are loaded

Verify that the Exchange Server .dll files that are required to display the Microsoft Exchange Server check box are loaded. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Backup.
  2. Start the System Information tool. To do this, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
  3. In the System Information Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, expand Software Environment, and then click Loaded Modules.
  4. In the right pane, double-click the Name column to sort the modules by name.
  5. Verify that Eseback2.dll and Esebcli2.dll appear in the list of loaded modules.

Step 2: Verify that the effective Group Policy allows for the backup of files and folders

Verify that the effective Group Policy for the Back up files and directories user right enables the Backup Operators group and the Administrators group to back up files and folders. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in. To do this, click Start, click Run, type secpol.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in, expand Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment.
  3. In the right pane, double-click Back up files and directories.
  4. If the Backup Operators group and the Administrators group do not appear in the Assigned To list, add them. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the Local Security Policy Setting dialog box, click Add.
    2. In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, type Backup Operators; Administrators, click Check Names, and then click OK.
  5. Click to select the Local Policy Setting check box for the Backup Operators group and for the Administrators group if these check boxes are not already selected, and then click OK. Then, update Group Policy on the local computer. Alternatively, restart the computer. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

227448 Using Secedit.exe to force Group Policy to be applied again

  6. In the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in, locate and then double-click the Back up files and directories policy.
  7. Verify that the Effective Policy Setting check box is selected for the following groups:
    • Administrators
    • Backup Operators
Note By default, this check box is selected. Also, this is an inherited setting. Therefore, the Effective Policy Setting check box is unavailable.

If this check box is not selected for one or both of these groups, you must troubleshoot Group Policy settings to determine which Group Policy is overriding the local security policy.

You can use the Gpresult tool or the Gptool tool to help troubleshoot Group Policy in Microsoft Windows 2000. These tools are included in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. For more information, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
