Article ID: 926178

Article Last Modified on 3/15/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Windows Vista Business 64-bit edition
  • Windows Vista Business
  • Windows Vista Enterprise
  • Windows Vista Home Basic
  • Windows Vista Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Starter
  • Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn" Beta 2

SYMPTOMS

After you install an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network adapter, you receive the following error message when you start Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn":

Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because ATM is not supported in Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn".

MORE INFORMATION

Because Windows Vista and Microsoft Windows Server Code Name "Longhorn" do not support ATM, the following features are not part of these operating systems:

  • Classical IP over ATM (CIP)
  • ATM Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) server
  • Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over ATM
  • Multiprotocol Encapsulation over ATM
  • Winsock over ATM
