After you add a picture as a background on your Zune device, the picture appears cropped

Article ID: 926163

Article Last Modified on 11/16/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Zune Digital Media Player
  • Zune software

SYMPTOMS

After you add a picture as a background on your Zune device, the picture appears cropped.

Note When a picture is cropped, you cannot view the whole picture. Parts of the picture that you want to include may be missing.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the Zune device scales the height of the picture to fit the height of the screen, centers the picture, and then removes the remaining width.

Note Background pictures appear in portrait mode with a screen size of 240 pixels wide by 320 pixels high (240 x 320).

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Edit the picture manually, synchronize (sync) the new picture to the Zune device, and then apply the picture as the background image. For more information about how to do this, see the "More Information" section.

MORE INFORMATION

If you want to retain the full height of the image and select the area on the sides to crop, follow these steps:

  1. Determine the height of the picture. To do this, right-click the picture, and then click Properties.

Note The height of the picture appears on the Summary tab under Advanced. You can also find this information by using a photo-editing program.

  2. Divide the height of the picture by 1.3333, and then round the resulting number to the nearest whole number. This calculation determines the appropriate width of the cropped picture. For example, a picture that has a size of 1600 x 1200 pixels has a height of 1200 pixels. These formulas determine that you should crop the picture to a width of 900 pixels.
  3. Crop the sides of the picture so that the width matches the width that you calculated.
  4. Save the picture in the library of your Zune device.
  5. Sync the picture to the device by using the Zune software.

If you want to select both the width and the height of the picture to crop, follow these steps:

  1. Use a photo-editing program to crop the picture to dimensions of 240 x 320 pixels or to any multiple of that size. For example, the following dimensions have the same proportions: 360 x 480, 480 x 640, and 720 x 960.
  2. Save the picture in the library of your Zune device.
  3. Sync the picture to the device by using the Zune software.

For more information about how to sync a file to your Zune device, see the "Syncing to Zune devices" topic in Zune Help.
