APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

After you deploy a new image on an existing Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 client computer, the SMS client computer is not discovered by Active Directory directory service discovery methods. Therefore, the SMS client computer cannot receive advertised program information.

CAUSE

This problem typically occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • The SMS client computer resides in a different time zone than the SMS site server.
  • Network issues cause the SMS client heartbeat records to take longer than the Active Directory discovery record to reach the SMS site server.

After you re-image an existing SMS client computer, the following scenario occurs:

  • A new heartbeat record is sent from the SMS client computer.
  • A new record is created in the SMS database that contains the same data as the previous record.
  • A new SMSGUID value and a new ItemKey=newitem value are created.
  • The previous discovery record is marked as obsolete.

When you re-image an SMS client computer that resides in a different time zone than the SMS site server, the Itemkey=olditem value may have a later time stamp than the time stamp on the latest heartbeat record that was sent by the re-imaged SMS client computer. In this scenario, the recent SMS client discovery information is merged with an obsolete record.
