Article ID: 926062

Article Last Modified on 5/14/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you run Psconfig.exe at a command line to try to upgrade a prerelease version of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 to the original release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, the upgrade operation fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Discovered a v3 connection string and SPFarm.Local indicates that this machine is not joined. Therefore we failed to determine if we were joined to a server farm.

CAUSE

This issue typically occurs if an incoming connection is made to the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 database during the upgrade process.

RESOLUTION

Note Before you upgrade Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, make sure that you close Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. Additionally, close any other sessions of Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

To resolve this issue, restart Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), and then run Psconfig.exe. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Right-click the correct computer that is running IIS, point to All Tasks, and then click Restart IIS.
  3. Rerun Psconfig.exe.

We recommend that you stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service before you upgrade Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. Right-click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Stop.
  3. Rerun Psconfig.exe.
  4. When the upgrade operation is complete, right-click World Wide Web Publishing Service, and then click Start.
