Error message during the Repair process for Microsoft Dynamics CRM on a Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 R2 server: "Detection of a named authority of Microsoft SQL Server"

Article ID: 926006

Article Last Modified on 1/7/2008

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 on a server that is running Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Release 2 (R2). You run the Repair process for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0. During the Repair process, you receive the following error message in the Environmental Diagnostic Wizard:

Detection of a named authority of Microsoft SQL Server

If you click Details in the error message window, you receive the following error message:

An error occurred at the time of the definition of service SQLSERVERAGENT with the AutoStart value: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified service does not exist as a service installed At Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Common.Utility.ServiceUtility.SetServiceToAutoStart (String serviceName, String machineName) At Microsoft.Crm.Setup.Server.ServiceRunningValidator.AutoStartLocalService (String serviceName, TimeSpan waitTimeForStart).

CAUSE

The Setup program for Microsoft Dynamics CRM running on Windows Small Business Server determines whether the installation is running in Basic or Advanced mode. During the Repair process, this value is not set.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create a configuration file to instruct Microsoft Dynamics CRM to use the correct installation option. Then run the Repair process in a Command Prompt window. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Create an XML file that uses the syntax that is in the following sample code. In this code, the XML file is named Config_installationoption.xml.

    <CrmSetup mode=”Advanced”>
                    <server />
    </CrmSetup>

    Note In this code sample, Advanced represents the installation option. You can set this option to either Basic or Advanced.

  2. Run the Microsoft CRM Server installation. To do this, click Start, click Run, type C:\ServerSetup.exe /config C:\ config installationoption.xml, and then click OK.
  3. When the installation starts, click the Repair option.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.
