Connection points vanish on a 3-D shape in a 2007 Office program

Consider the following scenario. You add a shape to a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 worksheet or to a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 slide. You add 3-D effects to the shape, and then rotate the shape along two or more axes. You then draw a line connector shape and try to connect it to one of the 3-D shape's connection points.

In this scenario, you can connect to the connection point if the connection point is on the surface of the 3-D shape. However, if this connection point is outside the surface of the 3-D shape, all the connection points vanish as soon as the end of the line connector shape is outside the surface of the 3-D shape.


This issue occurs because the connection points for the 3-D shape do not rotate together with the surface of the 3-D shape. However, the connection points are visible only when the end point of the line connector is physically over the surface of the 3-D shape. Depending on the shape that is used and on how much rotation you have applied to the shape, more than half of the connection points may be outside the shape's surface area. Therefore, you cannot connect to these points.

You can clearly see this issue when you apply 3-D effects and rotation to a line connector. The endpoint connection handles do not correspond to the visible endpoints of the line connector.


To work around this issue, you must apply the 3-D effects and the rotations after you use line connectors to connect to the shape.
