Excel: TRUNC() Function Not Described Clearly in Manual

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 4.0

SUMMARY

On page 438 of the version 4.0 "Microsoft Excel Function Reference," and pages 239-240 of the version 3.0 "Microsoft Excel Function Reference," the description for the TRUNC() function reads

Truncates a number to an integer by removing the fractional part of
   the number.

A more accurate description is

Truncates a number to the precision specified in num_digits by
removing the remaining fractional part. If num_digits is zero or
blank, truncates the number to an integer by removing the entire
   fractional part.

For example, TRUNC(8.932,2) returns 8.93, but TRUNC(8.932) returns 8.
