INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to create a custom Web package for use with Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007.

MORE INFORMATION

A Web package is a bundled collection of files that you export or import for use in a Web site. A Web package uses an .fwp file name extension. You may want to create a Web package if you want to share or reuse Web pages, a Web site, a list, or a library structure. When you create a Web package, you can include the whole Web site in the package. Or, you can include only the specific Web pages that you want. After you create a Web package, you can import and deploy the .fwp file to as many Web sites as you want.

A Web package may include the following items:

  • Lists
  • Libraries
  • Any documents in lists and in libraries
  • Web pages
  • Web Part pages
  • Custom link bars

However, a Web package cannot contain list data, subsites, or security and permissions settings. When a Web site is moved as empty content, list data that is part of the original Web site does not move with the Web pages in the package. For example, a document library may contain a column that you created to track the status of documents. When you package the library, the package includes the documents, the custom column, and the settings for that column. The package does not include the data that indicates the status of the documents.

Before you create a Web package, note the following:

  • Do not add Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services document libraries or picture libraries that contain files unless you want those files added to the destination Web site. For example, if a document library contains useful document templates, you may want to include the document templates in the Web package. However, make sure that you do not include document libraries or picture libraries in the Web package if the document libraries or picture libraries contain confidential information.
  • Do not add Universal Data Connection (UDC) files to a Web package. A UDC file is an XML file that is stored in the _fpdatasources folder. A UDC file contains configuration information for a data source. This file may contain passwords in plain text.

To create a Web package, follow these steps:

  1. Start SharePoint Designer 2007.
  2. On the File menu, click Open Site, click the Web site from which you want to create the Web package, and then click Open.
  3. On the File menu, point to Export, and then click Personal Web Package.
  4. If you want to view the dependencies of the files that you add to the Web package, follow these steps:
    1. Click Show Dependencies. Dependencies are additional files that the selected files require to work correctly.
    2. In the Dependency checking box, configure one of the following settings:
      • To show all dependent files, click Check all dependencies.

Note Click this setting if you want to include cascading style sheets in the Web package.
      • To show all dependent files except Web pages that are linked by hyperlinks, click Check all dependencies, except hyperlinks.
      • To not show dependencies and to include only the specific files that you select, click Do not check dependencies. This setting gives you control over the files that you want to include in the Web package.
  5. In the Files in Web site box, click the files or the folders that you want to add to the Web package, and then click Add. Dependent files are also added according to the setting that you configured in the previous step.
  6. Click Properties. Then, in the Web Package Properties dialog box, follow these steps:
    1. In the Title box, type a name for the Web package.
    2. In the Description box, type a description of the Web package.
    3. In the Author box, type the name that you want other users to see when they view the properties of the Web package.
    4. In the Company box, type the name of your company if you want.
Note The information that you specify in the Web Package Properties dialog box enables users to view information about the Web package before they import it. You must add this information before you save the Web package. You cannot add this information to the Web package later.
  7. Click OK two times.
  8. Save the Web package. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the File name box of the File Save dialog box, specify the name that you want to use for the Web package.

Note By default, the name that you specify in the Title box of the Web Package Properties dialog box appears in the File name box.
    2. Specify the location in which you want to save the Web package, and then click Save.
  9. Exit SharePoint Designer 2007.
