Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you perform one of the following operations:
You run the following statement.
DBCC FREEPROCCACHE
- You perform an ALTER DATABASE operation.
- You run the sp_configure stored procedure, or you run the sp_detach_db stored procedure.
- You restore a database.
When you perform one of these operations, the following symptoms may occur:
- The server stops responding.
- The performance is slow when you run a query.
- A time-out occurs when you run a query.
Additionally, the following error message may be logged in the SQL Server 2000 error log:
CAUSE
This problem occurs because SQL Server takes a long time to free a large procedure cache. The operations that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section trigger a process to free the procedure cache. If the procedure cache is large, this problem occurs.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2000 service pack that contains this hotfix.
