SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. You have an application that uses the SnaNlsMapString function and the Trnsbidi.dll file that are included in Microsoft Host Integration Server 2004. The application uses the SnaNlsMapString function and the Trnsbidi.dll file to convert Arabic characters from Extended Binary Coded Decimal Interchange Code (EBCDIC) to ASCII. The application passes more than 49 Arabic characters to the SnaNlsMapString function. In this scenario, the application may experience a heap corruption.
The heap corruption may cause the following symptoms to occur:
- Some converted Arabic characters may be reversed, or some converted Arabic characters may be located in an incorrect location. These positions are based on where the Arabic characters were located before they were converted from EBCDIC to ASCII.
- Some Arabic characters may be incorrectly converted when they are converted from EBCDIC to ASCII and then back to EBCDIC. Therefore, some resulting EBCDIC characters may differ from the original EBCDIC characters.
- The SnaNlsMapString function may not indicate the correct number of Arabic characters that are converted from EBCDIC to ASCII or that are converted from ASCII to EBCDIC.
RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.
