Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. In an application, you use the ResultSet object that is included in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver version 1.1. You use a SELECT statement to query data. In this scenario, the result set is returned very slowly.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
- The SELECT statement includes some character columns of the CHAR data type or of the VARCHAR data type.
- In the application, you specify the SelectMethod=cursor property for the connection.
- In the application, you set a small fetch size for the connection.
- The result set contains many rows.
- You specify one of the SQL collations for the non-Unicode character columns. For example, you specify the SQL_Latin1_General_CP850_CI_AI SQL collation for the CHAR data type columns.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.1 makes several costly calls to the Charset.isSupported function. The SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.1 does this to determine the character set that is associated with a given collation. Specifically, this problem occurs when many character sets are installed for the Java virtual machine.
RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.
