256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to prevent Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for Exchange from deleting fragmented e-mail messages.

MORE INFORMATION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Some e-mail client programs, such as Microsoft Outlook Express, let you send large e-mail messages in several fragments. By default, when Microsoft Antigen 9.0 for Exchange scans fragmented messages, the e-mail message may be tagged as FragmentedMessage. Additionally, the message body is deleted.

To work around this behavior, create a DWORD value in the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sybari Software\Antigen for Exchange

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Use an account that has administrative permissions to log on to the computer that is running Antigen 9.0 for Exchange.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sybari Software\Antigen for Exchange

  4. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sybari Software\Antigen for Exchange, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type MIMEDeletePartialMessages.
  6. Right-click MIMEDeletePartialMessages, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type 0 in the Value data box.

Note Fragmented messages are not deleted when the value data is set to 0. Fragmented messages are deleted when there is no MIMEDeletePartialMessages DWORD value in the registry or when the MIMEDeletePartialMessages value data is set to 1.
  8. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
  9. In the Services MMC snap-in, right-click AntigenService, and then click Restart.
