  • Applications that are installed by using Microsoft Windows Installer and that create a Windows NT service-based COM server during the installation may fail

    Symptoms

An application that is installed by using Windows Installer and that creates a Windows NT service-based Component Object Model (COM) server may fail. This problem occurs because a call made by the Windows Installer to resolve a CLSID fails. The call fails because the application that owns the CLSID has not finished installing. COM then treats the Windows Installer failure as fatal. This behavior causes the call to register the class object to fail. The installed application’s service treats this failure as non-fatal. The service continues running although the COM object is inaccessible. Therefore, the application may stop responding or fail.
